Frosty reception for South Korea's Winter Olympics detente with North

The Republic of Korea and the People " s Democratic Republic of Koreas (PDRK) agreed to march toghether under the flag of the Korean Reunification at the inaugural ceremony of the Winter Olympic Games PyeongChang 2018.

North Korean Olympic officials arrived in Switzerland on Thursday ahead of weekend talks at the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to finalize Pyongyang's participation.

The sanctions now bar nearly all exports from North Korea and all oil exports to the country, except for 500,000 barrels of refined fuel annually, as US Acting Deputy Assistant Secretary for the Economic Bureau Sandra Oudkirk explained in a telephone briefing with African journalists on Wednesday.

Also during Wednesday's talks, the Koreas agreed to march together under the Korea Unification Flag at the opening ceremony on February 9.

Prior to the Games, both sides will carry out joint training for skiers at the North's Masik Pass resort and a cultural event at the Mount Kumgang resort, for which Seoul officials plan to visit the sites next week.

Some conservative critics say North Korea's cheering and artistic groups are too big and worry the North may try to steal the show at the Olympics to launch what they call a "peace offensive" to try to show it's a normal country despite pursuing nuclear weapons. As in most other winter sports, the South is much stronger than the North.

"We are turning the Pyeongchang Olympics that we've got into the Pyongyang Olympics", said Hong Joon-pyo, leader of South Korea's main conservative opposition party, adding that Seoul was now "dancing to the tune" of the North Korean leader, Kim Jong-un.

Two of its figure skaters initially qualified for the Games, for example, and it's also possible that the two nations might dress an inter-Korean women's hockey team. The coach and members of the South Korean team are anxious their performance would be disrupted by accommodating North Korean players at short notice. "The South Korean authorities had better ponder over what unfavorable results may be entailed by their impolite behavior", the North's state-run Korean Central News Agency said on Sunday in its English report.

The title of the book comes from a Trump quote about North Korea. "Even if you don't use nuclear weapons, there are literally dug-in artillery and missile sites on the other side of that DMZ that will begin with, in the initial hours of any type of response from North Korea, a hundred thousand dead".

Still, she cautioned that the USA military officials and South Korean military and government leaders with whom she met made clear that the communist North is "not refraining from continuing to move forward with their efforts to solve the final problems with being able to nuclearize an intercontinental ballistic missile that can hit the American homeland".

Hyon Song-wol was due to lead a high-level delegation to South Korea for crunch Winter Olympics discussions.

Asked whether he expected North Korea and South Korea to settle outstanding issues at Saturday's talks, he appeared optimistic.

Ri led the North Korea delegation taking part in the initial talks on January 9.
