Apple and Google Are Rerouting Their Employee Buses as Attacks Resume

Apple and Google Are Rerouting Their Employee Buses as Attacks Resume

The first window was shattered on the evening of Friday 12 January, as the shuttle bus travelled from the company campus back into San Francisco. It is unclear at this time if rocks are being used but it has been suggested that someone might be using a pellet gun to take out the windows.

The attacks have forced Apple's shuttle off the highway.

However, they could be identified by their unique colors: Google's are white, Apple's are silver, and Facebook's are blue.

California Highway Patrol Officer Art Montiel told The Post that it is still not known what was used to damage the buses, but added that they were likely struck while traveling at freeway speeds. Anything thrown or shot at a bus with enough force to break its windows is a safety concern that puts passengers at risk of serious injury.

The shuttles haven't been popular among many born-and-bred San Franciscans, who say they have driven up rent prices in the neighborhoods where the shuttle stops. The buses were attacked on highway 280, so the company has made a decision to divert them from that road, even though doing so would extend the commute time by 30-45 minutes in either direction.

"Due to recent incidents of broken windows along the commute route, specifically on highway 280, we're re-routing coaches for the time being", Apple wrote in a Tuesday email to employees. The route change "could mean an additional 30 to 40 minutes of commute time in each direction for some riders", the email explained.

Photos sent by an anonymous Apple employee to the website Mashable showed the broken windows on Apple employee shuttle buses.

At least one charter shuttle carrying Google employees to its Mountain View HQ was also targeted. One incident reportedly happened outside Los Altos Hills, while another took place near the town of Woodside. Apple later told Mashable that it is working with police to investigate the incidents. We have reached out to Apple for comment.

Apple and Google might be rivals on the tech scene but seem to have a common enemy, one that seems keen to take things to a more physical level.
