Oklahomans have died due to the flu, health officials say

Local emergency rooms report that influenza-like illnesses are making 7 percent of emergency room visits for the week ending January 13.

The CDC rates Oklahoma in "Red" for high activity. Pneumonia is trending higher than the five-year median, while doctor visits for flu-like illnesses are trending lower than the five-year median.

Here in Tulsa County, 338 people have been hospitalized since flu season began in September, and the county is now reporting ten deaths.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention say you should be vigilant with washing your hands, avoid touching your eyes and mouth, get plenty of sleep and eat healthy to help give your immune system a boost.

In Summit County, the flu claimed the lives of a 1-year-old boy and four adults within the first two weeks of the year.

So far, two people have died from the flu in Denton County.

Symptoms of the flu can include a sudden onset of fever, dry cough, headache, muscle aches, tiredness, sore throat and nasal congestion or stuffiness, according to DHEC.

With the peak period of flu cases yet to come, OCCHD offers this cautionary advice that all individuals six months and older should get a flu vaccination. Nearly 36,000 people die every year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. "In other words, the complication might not be all that bad from the flu, it might be a shorter time that you would be sick".

The Ohio Department of Health said influenza A, or H3N2, is the most common virus this season. The cost is $10 and up, depending on insurance.

The drop in flu cases may signal the flu season has peaked in San Diego County.
