Turkey will not allow arming Kurds in Syria, army chief says

Turkey will not allow arming Kurds in Syria, army chief says

The US and European Union consider the PKK a terrorist organization.

Turkey warned the US that the deployment of an American-backed, Kurdish-led force in northern Syria along the Turkish border could cause irreparable harm to the countries' ties.

Meanwhile, Syrian activists said Turkish military activities near the borders with Afrin have continued, as well as shelling of the outskirts of the town.

Ankara views the YPG as an extension of the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) militant group, which has fought an insurgency in southeast Turkey since 1984. Adrian Rankine-Galloway told Anadolu Agency, referring to the PYD/YPG (People's Protection Units) in Afrin.

"We can not and will not allow support and arming of the YPG terrorist group under the name of an operational partner. We have committed almost £2.5 billion ($3.4 billion) to our humanitarian response to the crisis", Burt said.

The Pentagon says the force is aimed at fighters from the Islamic State (IS) group and maintaining stability in areas recaptured from the jihadists.

The US is understood to want to avoid Russia taking the initiative over Geneva with parallel talks hosted in the Russian city of Sochi which are also set to take place in the coming weeks. Russia, Iran, Turkey and the government in Damascus have all demonstrated that they are more invested, militarily and politically, to shaping the outcome in Syria than is the United States.

"The global coalition and its partners remain united and committed to the lasting defeat of Daesh and to preventing its exportation of terror around the world".

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said various times recently that Turkey's armed forces had completed preparations for an operation against the Kurdish-controlled region of Afrin in northwest Syria.

In a statement issued by Ryan Dillon, a spokesman for the USA -led coalition against ISIS, the alliance confirmed that it is "working jointly" with the YPG-led SDF "to establish and train the new Syrian Border Security Force".

The Turks consider the Kurds terrorists themselves as Prime Minister Binali Yildirim on Tuesday slammed the idea.

With rebel groups divided, he said, the S.D.F.is the last coherent force left to push for change.

"Tomorrow (or) the day after (or) within a short period, we will get rid of terror nests one-by-one in Syria starting with Afrin and Manbij" in northern Syria, he was quoted as saying by Agence France-Presse.

"I would like to ask all those countries that promised they would support the Syrian people and their aspirations for democracy and peace: why didn't they fulfil their promises?" Russian Federation called the plans a plot to dismember Syria and place part of it under USA control, and Turkey described the force as a "terror army". "Furthermore, they do not pose any threat to any other country in the region", the Public Affairs Office told Al Jazeera.

"We can not and will not allow support and arming of the YPG terror group under the name of an operational partner".

The Pentagon now has an estimated on the ground in Syria.
