California couple accused of torturing their children had North Texas ties

California couple accused of torturing their children had North Texas ties

When police arrived at the property, about 70 miles east of Los Angeles, they discovered several children shackled to their beds in "dark and foul-smelling surrounds".

The parents - 57-year-old David Turpin and 49-year-old Louise - were arrested and each charged with nine counts of torture and 10 counts of child endangerment.

However, the couple wasn't able to provide a logical reason behind the children's state or why they were held captive.

Authorities managed to free all children, feed them and question them about why they were mistreated.

All 13 victims were hospitalized for examinations and treatment. The seven adults are being treated at Corona Regional Medical Center in Corona, authorities said.

Seven of the victims were adults, ranging in age from 18 to 29, the sheriff's office said. The West Virginia-based grandparents said that the children were given "very strict homeschooling" and that they would memorize long Bible passages.

He said there was no indication any of the children were sexually abused, although that was still being investigated.

Social workers had never visited either, said Susan von Zabern, director of the county Department of Public Social Services.

A friend commented at the time on a photo of one of the events, writing: "I watched your wedding video".

Records say the school was opened in March, 2011. They are accused of holding 13 of their children captive in their home.

Photos on a Facebook page that appeared to be created by the parents showed the couple at Disneyland with the children wearing matching shirts.

Their bankruptcy lawyer, Ivan Trahan, told the New York Times he never met the children but the couple "spoke about them highly".

Andrew Santillan, who lives in the neighbourhood was surprised and told the Press Enterprise: "I didn't know there were kids in the house".

Officers said the 17-year-old girl looked like she was only 10 years old and appeared to be very thin. The registered address, however, is the Turpins' home.

The children, some of them chained to furniture, were described as weak and small for their age.

"They were very, very pale-skinned, nearly like they've never seen the sun", the neighbor said. "You would think you would have heard them", she said. They previously lived in Texas for many years, and have twice declared bankruptcy.

Kent Ripley, an Elvis impersonator who performed a vow renewal for David and Louise Turpin at the Elvis chapel in Las Vegas, told ABC affiliate KTNV-TV in Las Vegas, "They sang with me".
