Giants Deal For Pirates Slugger Andrew McCutchen

The San Francisco Giants' active offseason continued Monday with reports the club has acquired five-time All-Star outfielder Andrew McCutchen from the Pittsburgh Pirates.

It's not a surprise that the Pirates ended up trading McCutchen. On the other hand, the time to trade him was now if the franchise was ever going to let him go.

The 2013 #Nl Mvp has had an interesting last few seasons. He cost them four players, including prospect Christian Arroyo, but cleaned up a problem position for them, and is one of the sturdier personalities in the game. He's a career.291/.379/.487/.866 hitter. In the 20 years after his departure, the team failed to make the postseason. Overall not awful, but low for McCutchen Standards. He had a fairly miserable 2016 season on the offensive side, then was moved out of center field until the Pirates were caught short there, but rebounded in 2017 to post an.849 OPS and 28 home runs. The 31-year-old superstar had been rumored to be on the move for over a year.

Salary-wise, he takes the Giants to $191M (including the Matt Cain buyout), allowing them no more real headroom on the luxury threshold. It will be a tough race for the Giants in 2018, considering they have the Dodgers, Rockies, and Diamondbacks to deal with in their division.

There will be a lot of discussion regarding the future of the Pirates. They'll get back to you on the specifics. Without McCutchen, fans are looking at an offense led by Josh Harrison, David Freese, and the perennially disappointing outfield duo of Starling Marte and Gregory Polanco.

That is, the Pirates have made a decision to play for another day. The new contract buys out all of the closer's arbitration years and potentially two free agent years.
