Hawaii Gets False Alarm about 'Inbound' Ballistic Missile

Hawaii Gets False Alarm about 'Inbound' Ballistic Missile

In December, Hawaii began monthly testing of a nuclear warning siren system that would be used in case of an impending nuclear missile strike.

Just after 8 a.m. on Saturday, an alert was sent to mobile phones and televisions warning of an incoming ballistic missile heading toward the island. "An employee pushed the wrong button", Mr Ige said.

For almost 40 minutes, it seemed like the world was about to end in Hawaii, an island paradise already jittery over the threat of nuclear-tipped missiles from North Korea.

The Federal Communications Commission is launching a full investigation into the alert, according to Chief of Staff Matthew Berry. He said Hawaii doesn't have fallout shelters, and even if there were any, residents probably wouldn't have time to reach them.

The administrator apologised and vowed changes, revealing that as a result of this incident they need to "expand the notification protocols" and "make more contacts to notify that this was a false alarm".

World number four and 2017 PGA Championship victor Justin Thomas was one of several players who took to social media following the false alarm in Honolulu. "I'm still shaking from it". He also took emergency management officials to task for taking 30 minutes to issue a correction, prolonging panic.

Hawaii Emergency Management Agency spokesman Richard Repoza said it's a false alarm and that the agency is trying to determine what happened.

Adventurer Alison Teal called it "the worst moment of my life".

The threats of North Korea sending ballistic missiles capable of reaching the mainland U.S. has surely placed the residents on guard.

"We made a mistake", he acknowledged in a press conference. Officials say a new procedure will be put in place to prevent a mistake like this from happening again.

The Hawaii Emergency Management Agency tweeted that there was no threat about 10 minutes after the initial alert, but that didn't stop everyone from falsely over reacting.

Footage shows how people in Hawaii were terrified by the false warning of an imminent missile attack by North Korea on Saturday morning.

In a separate tweet after confirmation that the alert was sent in error, Peterson wrote: "Man".

"There is no missile threat or danger to the State of Hawaii".

"I am sorry for the pain and confusion it caused", he said.

A spokesperson for the White House said that US President Donald Trump had been briefed on the alarm.

Teal, the adventurer and Hawaiian native, said "everyone was in a panic".

HollywoodLifers, were you surprised about the false ballistic missile alarm in Hawaii?

Wasylyk was considering moving with her family to the building's parkade for protection.

Williams said 20 minutes passed before she got word the alert was a mistake. Just last month Hawaii tested their nuclear attack warning sirens for the first time since the 1980s.

He said he was at work this morning when everyone's cell phones started going off, alerting them to an inbound missile.

"I'm angry", Sen. Brian Schatz, D-Hawaii, said on CBSN shortly after the incident.

Though the alert was quickly deemed false, many Hawaii residents heeded the nerve-wracking warning, scrambling to take refuge in hallways and basements.

After months of heightened nuclear tensions between the US and North Korea, frightened people scrambled for safety and communications were bogged down.

Local 4 News spoke with several local people who are in Hawaii and received the message.
