Hospital apologises to elderly patient after 22-hour wait

Hospital apologises to elderly patient after 22-hour wait

"An average of 10 to 12 hours from decision to admit a patient until they are transferred to a bed..." states the petition. No other trust was below 57 per cent.

The national result is a significant decline on the same comparable week in the previous year when 92.5% of patients were dealt with by the targeted time.

Meanwhile trusts up and down the country are seeing no let up in pressure in the new year, with some fearing the worst is yet to come.

She said: "People are waiting too long in A&E departments because there are no beds for them on wards, and because many of those hospital beds are taken up by patients who are waiting for their social care arrangements". Its chief executive Chris Hopson said: "If we continue to run the NHS at close to 100% capacity, day in day out, permanently in the red zone, it's not surprising that the service can't cope when we get a high, but entirely predictable, spike in demand".

"During this time pressures on our services led to an unusually large number of A and E breaches".

"Despite the best efforts and dedication of NHS staff to treat patients quickly, waiting times for non-urgent care have also deteriorated again in the past year".

She also apologised to 80-year old patient Tom Wilson after his case was brought to her attention by Scottish Labour leader Richard Leonard.

"The situation has improved over the last week and we would like to thank our fantastic staff for their on-going efforts during this extremely challenging period and the public for their understanding and co-operation", he added.

Elective and non-urgent operations were cancelled last week at three hospitals and one health board, NHS Lanarkshire, had to ask office staff to volunteer to clean dirty wards in a bid to free up beds.

"I've heard an overwhelming number of reports from clinicians about how flu and respiratory illness, combined with other winter pressures and exceptional and sustained levels of demand, is changing the way they are treating patients arriving at A&E".

The letter was in fact leaked to the Health Service Journal.

She added: "Nevertheless, Scotland's NHS remains the best-performing NHS anywhere in the United Kingdom".

'Thousands of patients are waiting in ambulances for hours as the hospitals lack adequate space'.

In an unprecedented move, doctors told May that 120 patients a day are being managed in some hospital corridors, with "some dying prematurely".

According to a spokeswoman from the Department of Health and Social Care as a response to this letter, there is a 68.7% increase in the number of A&E consultants over the past 7-8 years and that "NHS was given top priority in the recent budget with an extra £2.8 billion allocated over the next two years".

"That's why we recently announced the largest single increase in doctor training places in the history of the NHS - a 25 per cent expansion". "The NHS today has launched their national flu programme and I would encourage people to act on the advice that the NHS is giving and also encourage NHS staff who haven't had the flu vaccine yet to have that vaccine".
