Ecuador grants nationality to Julian Assange

Ecuador grants nationality to Julian Assange

"Ecuador knows that the way to resolve this issue is for Julian Assange to leave the embassy to face justice", the office said.

The nation's foreign minister announced Thursday that officials had made a decision to permit Assange's naturalization while they look for ways to resolve his situation.

She confirmed Assange's citizenship request at a press conference in Quito, saying she feared for threats to his life coming from third party states.

After media reports on the development, the Ecuadorian Foreign Ministry said it would not respond to "rumours or distorted or out-of-context information" on the Assange case, without mentioning the number specifically.

Assange tweeted a picture of himself wearing an Ecuador national football short on Wednesday.

Ecuador's foreign minister, Maria Fernanda Espinosa, said: 'No solution will be achieved without global cooperation and the cooperation of the United Kingdom, which has also shown interest in seeking a way out'.

"Ecuador is now exploring other solutions in dialogue with the United Kingdom, like good offices of renowned authorities, other states, or global organizations that could facilitate a just, final and dignified solution for all parties", Espinosa told a press conference in Quito.

Swedish prosecutors have since dropped their investigation into the allegations but Assange still faces arrest by Scotland Yard for breaching bail conditions if he steps outside the embassy.

However, UK police say he will be arrested if he leaves the embassy in Knightsbridge for failing to surrender to the court in 2012.

His continued political activism creates diplomatic headaches for Ecuador.

Mr Assange was accused of raping two women in Sweden in 2010 and was subsequently arrested in London. Mr Assange is unlawfully and arbitrarily detained by the United Kingdom authorities and must be released.

WikiLeaks starts releasing more than 250,000 classified U.S. diplomatic cables, revealing frank assessments of United States officials as well as the views of other governments.

The newspaper said Assange may also have been given a passport.

The demand for an end to the state persecution of Julian Assange must be taken up by the worldwide working class.
