'Camila' review: Camila Cabello's powerful solo debut

On the list of shadiest of shady award show moments, Fifth Harmony figuratively kicking Camila Cabello off the stage in front of the entire world the MTV VMAs previous year is definitely right at the top.

"It's my favorite thing that I've ever done and I hope you like it!"

Rumors of a feud reached a fever pitch last August when the four-member group (sans Camila) pulled a statement-making stunt during a performance at MTV's Video Music Awards. Her 2017 single, "Havana", hit No. 2 on the Billboard charts, and her debut album, Camila, drops on January 12. She hit the stage at The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on January 10 to give the first-ever TV performance of her song "Never Be The Same", and viewers were definitely impressed.

So that's when she made a decision to say goodbye to the girl group and in her eyes, "if anyone wants to explore their individuality, it's not right for people to tell you no", she told the publication.

Last year, there was a seismic shift in cultural appetite: Rap overtook rock as the most popular music genre, and soldiering pop heavyweights found chinks in their armor as swaggering viral upstarts came for their thrones. In her New York Times interview, she stated, "It definitely hurt my feelings" (via Billboard).

Confident enough in her tenure as a solo artist to discuss the nasty split, Cabello finally dished on her side of the drama. I was just like, 'What?

Poor Camila, she was clearly cut off guard. She said she had expressed her desire to write songs for the group as well as for her solo album but was continuously shut down.

She explained, "I have to make space for the good stuff to happen in my life".

Cabello left Fifth Harmony in December 2016.

She added, "I wasn't expecting it, I wasn't prepared for it - especially because at that point I'd moved on from it".

Yup, the most identifiable part of her smash hit immediately occurred to her during a session with Frank Dukes, who said that as soon as she heard the riffs and salsa influences, she thought of her birthplace. "I don't like holding onto the past".
