Quake with magnitude 7.6 hits Caribbean; damage being assessed

"Based on the preliminary natural disaster parameters, hazardous tsunami waves are possible for coasts located within 1,000 kilometers of the quake epicenter", the US National Weather Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said.

A Tsunami warning has been issued for Jamaica, following a magnitude 7.6 quake that struck in the Caribbean Sea between the coast of Honduras and the Cayman Islands on Tuesday night.

The epicenter of the natural disaster was 125.4 miles north/northeast off the coast of Barra Patucca, Honduras and 25 miles from the Swan Islands, which only houses a small naval post.

President Juan Orlando Hernandez tweeted that the emergency system had been activated and people should remain calm.

But two hours after the quake, the threat of a tsunami had passed, and the Tsunami Warning Center withdrew all advisories connected with the quake.

The reports that the 7.6 magnitude makes this one of the most powerful earthquakes to hit the Caribbean in modern day history.

The quake was.6 magnitude larger than the 7.0 natural disaster that devastated Haiti in 2010.

The tremor occurred about 6 miles below the surface. The natural disaster that devastated Haiti was magnitude 7.0.

Other than cracks in some buildings in the region, no other damage or injuries were reported.
