Google Honored biochemist Har Gobind Khorana on His 96th Birthday Anniversary

Google Honored biochemist Har Gobind Khorana on His 96th Birthday Anniversary

Khorana was born on this day in 1922, in Raipur in Punjab, which is now part of present-day Pakistan.

In the Indian-American scientist's honour, Google is changing its logo in 13 countries to a doodle - or illustration - of him and his DNA work.

Khorana would have been 96 years old on Tuesday, January 9.

Several years later, Khorana created the first synthetic gene - a step that led to commercialized gene synthesis at businesses around the world.

Khorana, depicted in the doodle by Bangalore-based illustrator Rohan Dahotre, shared the 1968 Nobel Prize in physiology/medicine with Robert Holley and Marshall Nirenberg "for their interpretation of the genetic code and its function in protein synthesis".

Fascinated by science since childhood, Har Gobind completed his schooling from a school in Multan that gathered under the tree.

When Khorana grew up and attended college in the USA, he was able to gain scholarships and obtain a doctorate in organic chemistry by 1948, when he was 26 years old.

Khorana died November 9, 2011, at the age of 89.

Throughout his famed career, Khorana never lost touch with his modest beginnings, which infused him with a sense of humility that was admired by his colleagues.

Khorana's biggest contribution to the work was isolating codons, the three-letter sequences of RNA that are the blueprints for amino acids at the fundamental building block of life.

In 1970, he became a Professor of Biology and Chemistry at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.Dr Khorana married a Swiss national, Esther Elizabeth Sibler, who he credited with giving him "a sense of goal when he felt out of place everywhere and at home nowhere". After a doctorate in Organic Chemistry, he went to Zurich to work with Professor Vladimir Prelog. His death was announced by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology where he was a professor emeritus.

"Khorana lived in India until 1945, when the award of a Government of India Fellowship made it possible for him to go to England and he studied for a Ph". He is survived by his children Julia and Davel.
