Cam Newton: NFL asks for explanation over Carolina Panthers treatment

Cam Newton: NFL asks for explanation over Carolina Panthers treatment

A woozy-looking Newton was able to stand up and attempted to run off the field.

Interim general manager Marty Hurney insists the Carolina Panthers handled the medical treatment of quarterback Cam Newton "the right way" during Sunday's 31-26 playoff loss to the New Orleans Saints.

The quarterback took a heavy hit to the head from Saints defensive tackle David Onyemata midway through the fourth quarter, with the game still in the balance. Newton came out of the game for one play, was not sent to the specified blue medical tent and then re-entered and played the remainder of the game. He led a touchdown march that got Carolina within one score, but their next and final possession ended with a turnover on downs.

But on Twitter, viewers shared memes blasting the Panthers for not following the concussion protocol.

"He took a knee because they told him to take a knee so we could get the official timeout and Derek [Anderson] could warm up, " Hurney said when explaining why Newton went to the ground while coming off the field.

But that price is a pittance for a multi-billion-dollar franchise, so the question of whether the punishment for clubs found to be guilty of not following the rules could become an offseason topic of debate. "And it was really getting poked in the eye". Rivera said during his postgame news conference that Newton was told to sit down near the sideline to give Anderson an opportunity to warm up before going into the game.

After the game, Newton and Coach Ron Rivera said Newton had been hit in the eye.

The NFL and union announced changes to the protocol last month in the wake of Texans quarterback Tom Savage returning to the field after having an apparent seizure after a hit. The post contained a picture of the Jordan-brand wine bottle and a mailing label addressed to Newton at Panthers headquarters.

"I was actually talking more to the other Kalil brother", Jordan said after the game.

Newton spent time on the ground after the hit. After the Week 3 game, Jordan made some jokes about Newton's fashion choices. "And again, from that point on I don't think anything else needs to be said about it". "We romped him good".

"Yeah, you know, Carolina picked him up so the brothers could reunite", Jordan said.
