Blood shortage prompts 'urgent' need for donors

Blood shortage prompts 'urgent' need for donors

Winter weather can have a tremendous impact on the blood supply this time of year when brutally cold temperatures keep many donors home, and snow and ice storms often result in the cancellation of blood drives.

More than 150 drives were canceled across the country, including 10 in NY just last week. This network works in tandem, moving lifesaving donations throughout the system-once local patient needs are met-to help ensure blood is available when and where it's needed most.

"Thank you to those wonderful people from the Ipswich community who rolled up their sleeves and gave blood during the festive season, because your gift has helped to save lives", she said.

As members of the American Red Cross start the new year, they unfortunately face a hard time for blood collections during the challenging winter months. The American Red Cross says these affected more than 28,000 fewer donations than needed in November and December.

They say that the need for O-negative blood is particularly urgent.

Platelets: The clotting portion of blood primarily given to cancer patients during treatment and always in great demand.

O-negative is a universal blood type, meaning that it can be given to a patient no matter what blood type they have. There's also a Blood Donor App.
