Jammu and Kashmir Blast In Sopore Kills 4 Policemen

Three policemen lost their lives and two others are seriously injured after an IED blast in Baramulla District's Sopore in Jammu and Kashmir on Saturday morning. It killed an assistant sub-inspector and three constables, damaged six shops and left a huge crater.

Inspector General of Police (Kashmir range) Munir Khan said the IED had been planted in a shop and triggered off when police personnel on duty came closer to it.

However, other media reports have said that a police vehicle ran over the IED, triggering the blast.

Police said that security across the town and its neighbourhood had been beefed up ahead of one-day strike called by local traders and endorsed by an alliance of key separatist leaders called "Joint Resistance Leadership".

Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti expressed condolences over the deaths of the policemen. The area has been cordoned off and a search operation is underway. The government forces have sealed all entry and exit points of Sopore soon after the blast. The policemen were from the 3rd Battalion of Indian Reserve Police.

ASI Irshad Ahmad, 58, leaves behind his mother, wife and four children.

"Just because they claimed responsibility don't mean that they did it".

He said constable Ghulam Nabi has aged parents, pregnant wife, four-year-old daughter Faheeqa Nabi, two brothers and two unmarried sisters.

The IED explosion took place a week after JeM militants carried out a suicide attack at a CRPF camp at Lethpora village in Pulwama district.
