Raiders to make Jon Gruden highest-paid coach in National Football League history

Raiders to make Jon Gruden highest-paid coach in National Football League history

Jon Gruden will be officially named the head coach of the Oakland Raiders in a "splashy" press conference Tuesday according to Steve Corkran and confirmed by Adam Schefter.

Gruden famously won Super Bowl XXXVII with the Tampa Bay Bucs back in 2003. when he beat the Raiders. However, prior to that he coached in Oakland for 4 seasons.

Gruden hasn't coached in the National Football League since 2008 and has since worked as a color commentator and featured on-air personality for ESPN, where he's reportedly one of their highest paid employees.

The Raiders will still be in Oakland for the upcoming season before their eventual move to Las Vegas.

ESPN reported last week that Raiders owner Mark Davis was willing to strongly pursue Gruden, including a possible offer of an ownership stake in the team. Carolina Panthers coordinator Greg Olson is expected to be Gruden's offensive coordinator and Cincinnati Bengals defensive coordinator Paul Guenther is a top candidate for Oakland's defensive coordinator position.

Gruden coached the Raiders from 1998 to 2001, compiling a 38-26 record. He has a 95-81 career record.

The NFL on Friday said the Raiders have complied with the Rooney Rule in their coaching search.

"I can tell you we believe the Rooney Rule was complied with", Lockhart said. Late owner Al Davis hired Art Shell in 2006, 11 years after firing him the first time.
