David Letterman returns to TV with Obama interview

David Letterman is out of retirement and returning to television with a six-episode, 60-minute Netflix series - My Next Guest Needs No Introduction with David Letterman. Obama will join Letterman on January 12, 2018 for the launch of the new "My Next Guest Needs No Introduction with David Letterman" on Netflix.

Netflix has been pushing its comedy offerings hard lately, airing exclusive specials from Dave Chappelle, Jerry Seinfeld, Amy Schumer, and others, but My Next Guest Needs No Introduction with David Letterman will be a different kind of beast. Obama's appearance on the new show marks the former president's first television interview since leaving office previous year.

Obama has laid low since leaving the White House a year ago with the exception of a few public appearances and a radio interview with Britain's Prince Harry recorded in September and broadcast last month. The hourlong series will premiere next Friday, and five subsequent episodes will bow monthly through the first half of the year. He ended a storied 33-year run in late-night TV that began with his 1982-1993 residency on NBC's "Late Night".

In 2015, Letterman signed off from The Late Show after more than three decades on the air. These segments will allow him to "dig deeper" into topics related to the guest featured in the episode.

The new series was just announced last August and will have the veteran talk show hosts interviewing prominent figures both inside and outside of a studio setting.
