The fatality was South African, according to a health ministry official.

The balloon was travelling over the ancient city when it was forced off course and into a mountainous area by strong winds, according to reports. However, the one who lost her life in the incident was from South Africa.

The Egyptian Aviation Authority confirmed 19 people were injured in the crash, which took place at about 7:30 a.m. local time.

The crash, to the west of the city of Luxor, happened due to bad weather conditions, the news agency said.

Luxor has witnessed hot air balloon accidents in past years.

The deadliest crash occurred in 2013 when 19 people, mostly Asian and European tourists, were killed after the balloon caught fire in a mid-air gas explosion and plummeted 1,000 feet into a sugar cane field.
