5 deputies shot, 1 fatally, in shooting near Denver

The sheriff said the shooting was "more of an ambush type of attack" because the suspect knew they were coming in to investigate the disturbance. Of the five deputies wounded, one died.

The Douglas County Sheriff's Office said there is no update on the deputies' status and the scene remains active in the Highlands Ranch area. The shooting started at the apartment building, which is located near County Line Road between Colorado Boulevard and University Boulevard. Three victims at one hospital were suffering non life-threatening injuries, but the condition of the other patients is unknown, according to the station. The sheriff's office issued a "Code Red" around 7:15 a.m. local time, asking residents in the area to avoid windows and shelter in place.

A SWAT team responded to the scene, according to a spokeswoman for the Sheriff's office, and a major highway south of the city was shut down.

County officials were setting up an emergency shelter for those displaced by the incident, citing the "size and scope of the investigation".

Multiple deputies are "down" in Douglas County, Colorado, KUSA reports.

My heart breaks for all of those affected by the awful tragedy in Douglas County. Our law enforcement officers work tirelessly every day to keep our communities safe and today all of Colorado stands with our law enforcement community.
