Unemployment rate in all 55 West Virginia counties increase in November

Unemployment rate in all 55 West Virginia counties increase in November

Despite the unemployment rates increasing in each county last month, the Eastern Panhandle continued to lead the state with the lowest jobless rates of West Virginia's 55 counties, according to a report released Wednesday by WorkForce West Virginia.

Lewis County's rate rose from a record low of 5.5 percent in October to 5.9 percent in November.

Jobless rates in neighboring counties in November, with October rates in parentheses, were: Allen, 4.2 percent (4.5 percent); Hardin, 4.1 (4.4); Henry, 3.8 (4); Putnam, 3 (3); Seneca, 3.9 (4.2); Wood, 3.6 (3.9); and Wyandot, 3.1 (3.2).

Harrison County's unemployment rate at 4.3 and Hancock's at 4.7 in November were lower than the state average and Jackson County's rate of 5.2 percent was slightly higher. With the exception of one month when it was equal (October 2014), Indiana's unemployment rate now has been below the USA rate for more than four years.

The labor force is made up of the people holding jobs or looking for work. The rate is an improvement from past year, when the November unemployment rate was 5.4 percent.

"While unemployment rates remain near historically low levels in many counties, there are still areas that need our assistance", Phillips said.

Beloit's rate in November was down a full percentage point from November of 2016 when the jobless rate was 4.7 percent.

Eight of the ten lowest county unemployment rates in November were in Middle Tennessee, with Knox and Sevier counties in East Tennessee rounding out the list of the top ten lowest rates in the state.

Private sector employment has grown by more than 13,700 over the year, and has decreased by 4,200 over the previous month, primarily due to losses in the Trade, Transportation and Utilities (-2,900) and the Leisure and Hospitality (-2,500) sectors. It was up three-tenths of 1 percent from 3.2 percent in October.

The increase in positions from the business and professional services sector contributed to robust nonagricultural job growth overall for Yakima County.

The sectors of Farming and Manufacturing both posted significant job declines for the month, but the loss was offset by gains in other sectors, primarily in retail positions, according to the EDD report.

Crawford: 4.2 percent, up from 4.0 percent.

Over the year, Idaho total nonfarm jobs increased 2.3 percent — 16,200 higher than 2016. Four counties were at or above 5 percent — Clearwater, 6 percent; Shoshone, 5.5 percent; Lewis, 5.5 percent; and Adams, 5 percent.
