Andrew McCabe, FBI's Embattled Deputy, Is Expected to Retire

Andrew McCabe, FBI's Embattled Deputy, Is Expected to Retire

Trump, who is spending the holidays at his Florida resort, said in a second tweet Saturday, "FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe is racing the clock to retire with full benefits".

But it's less common for a deputy director to be in the spotlight.

The 49-year-old CT native first came under fire from the President's associates last October after it was revealed that then-Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe had donated $467,500 to his wife Jill McCabe's Democratic bid for the state's Senate. It is standard for FBI officials to leave the bureau for new opportunities upon becoming retirement-eligible, and it was widely expected that McCabe - independent of the criticism from Trump - would retire to give the new FBI director a chance to select his own No. 2.

Conservatives were outraged in 2016 to learn that large amounts of campaign cash were funneled to McCabe's wife from a political action committee headed by close Clinton ally Terry McAuliffe. McCabe's wife's campaign ended months before he become involved with the investigation, according to the FBI.

After obtaining a law degree from Washington University and interning at the Justice Department's criminal division, McCabe joined the FBI in 1996 as an agent at the bureau's NY field office.

US President Donald Trump quickly reacted to news about McCabe's alleged departure from office, reminding of McCabe's wife ties to Clinton. "His only motivation is to support and defend the Constitution".

One of the main targets of the Republicans has been FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe, because he worked under former FBI Director James Comey, according to The Hill.

"Normally, someone being investigated for obstruction of justice who intimidates and threatens three key witnesses against him (here Comey, McCabe and Baker) risks additional witness tampering charges", Eisen wrote. Russian Federation denies meddling in the election, and Trump has denied any collusion.

McCabe's committee comments prompted Trump to question why Attorney General Jeff Sessions hadn't replaced McCabe, whom he blasted as a "Comey friend" in a tweet at the time. The president and congressional Republicans have seized on that as a sign of anti-Trump bias in Federal Bureau of Investigation leadership.

But several reports pointed out that news of McCabe's imminent retirement is likely prompted by the fact that he's about to become eligible for his full pension benefits.
