Israeli forces detain 17-year-old Palestinian girl in overnight raid

Israeli forces detain 17-year-old Palestinian girl in overnight raid

Palestinian children and women face Israeli soldiers during the weekly protest against the occupation in the west Bank village of Nabi Saleh, April 20, 2012.

Ahed Bassem al-Tamimi was seized at dawn when Israeli soldiers raided her family house and searched it, taking personal laptops, mobile phones and electronic equipment belonging to the al-Tamimi family.

Ahed and her family continue their struggle.

A Palestinian girl who was caught on video slapping a soldier in the Israeli-occupied West Bank has been remanded in custody until Thursday, the police said on Tuesday.

The girls filmed their confrontation of the soldiers with cellphones.

Her father claims the video was filmed immediately after Israeli forces fired tear-gas canisters at their home. We are used to criticism from the worldwide community about the violence of the occupation, but we are not so accustomed to criticism over two soldiers who thought before raising their hands to strike.

"But because we resist, we pay the price".

Earlier on Tuesday, the occupying state's Minister of Education, Naftali Bennet, also spoke against Tamimi. Numerous videos were shared on Ahed's own Facebook.

What leads a girl, who in any other place in the world would be busy with schoolwork, hobbies, and dreams of the future (a year ago Ahed said that if it were not for the occupation, she would be a soccer player) to endanger herself by standing up to armed soldiers?

Ahed has been praised by activists and the global community for her courage during protests in Nabi Saleh, which have been held every Friday in the village for years.

On Monday, Israeli forces detained 15-year-old Ahmad Tamimi from his school in a nearby village and released him later in the night, Manal said. "This is also an important message", Lieberman continued.

"This is making the children fear that they will be the next ones to be either be injured, killed or arrested". Bennett noted that under Israeli law, attacking soldiers is punishable by up to seven years in jail.

"His situation is very bad", she said.

The Palestinian NGO Badil told Al Jazeera that it was common for Palestinians to sleep with their clothes on in order to "avoid further invasion of privacy and embarrassment" during the raids.

Israeli military raids into Palestinian cities, towns, and refugee camps are a near daily occurrence.
