Putin thanks Trump for helping to foil terror attack plot

The White House on Sunday confirmed media reports from Russian Federation that US President Donald Trump had spoken to Russia's Vladimir Putin on Sunday.

Russia's Vladimir Putin called President Trump Sunday to thank him for US intelligence that helped thwart terrorist attacks in St. Petersburg, officials in both countries said.

According to Russian news outlets, the Kremlin stated that the Central Intelligence Agency tip-off assisted Russian security services in preventing a planned explosion in the Kazan Cathedral in Saint Petersburg.

The press office of Russia's Federal Security Service (FSB) reported earlier that seven members of a terrorist cell had been detained for plotting terror attacks.

According to Russian media, Putin also reassured Trump that Russia's intelligence service would transmit any information pertaining to the attacks on the United States to the White House, as it had done in the past.

Putin and his U.S. counterpart have welcomed the prevention of a terror attack as a positive example of bilateral cooperation, the White House statement read.

White House press secretary Sarah Sanders confirmed that the call from Putin to Trump took place and said a readout would be provided to the press shortly.

Putin added: "If Russian special services obtain any information on terrorist threats against the United States and its citizens, they will definitely and immediately pass it to American counterparts through partner channels".

Police confiscated a large number of explosives used to make homemade bombs, automatic rifles, munitions and extremist literature, the Kremlin said.

Russian Federation has suffered several attacks this year, including a bombing on the Saint Petersburg metro in April that left 14 people dead.

US President Donald Trump criticized Russia Friday for not doing enough to pressure North Korea to halt its nuclear weapons program.

But diplomatic ties between Washington and Moscow are still fraught, with both expelling some of each other's diplomats in September and the U.S. designation last month of Russia's English-language news channel RT as a "foreign agent". "There is every reason to believe that we will be able to at least partially re-establish the level of cooperation that we need".
