MA named healthiest state in new report

The Nutmeg State joins Massachusetts, Hawaii, Vermont, and Utah at the top of a new report by the United Health Foundation, which took into account rates of infectious diseases, obesity, smoking, and a number of other factors.

MA has been named America's healthiest state in the report, taking the top spot because of its low uninsured population, low obesity rates, and the high number of mental health providers.

Massachusetts, Hawaii, Vermont, Utah and CT rank as the five healthiest states in 2017.

MS ranked 50th for the least healthy state, according to the survey.

Despite years of efforts to even out health disparities across the United States, some states are dramatically healthier than others, according to a new report.

The 2017 report analyzed 35 measures covering behaviors, community and environment, policy, clinical care, and outcomes data.

"The rankings are an important indicator of the significant progress we've made in critical public-health areas, such as tobacco control, increasing vaccination rates, and reducing obesity, " said Public Health Commissioner Dr. Monica Bharel. The increase can be attributed to drug deaths that have seen a 7 percent increase and cardiovascular deaths that went up by 2 percent.

Alabama was singled out as the state with the poorest mental health care, given the low concentration of therapists.

It ranked Colorado as the second most physical, and has the second lowest percentage of children living in poverty. "Even the top USA state in each of these measures ranks toward the bottom among OECD countries".

North Dakota was the state to experience the greatest drop in rankings, seven places to No. 18, showing poor rankings in rates of smoking, salmonella infection and immunizations among children in the past year.

"We're spending more on health care and we die sooner", he said. "This is a call to action for each of us to make changes in our own lifestyles that can help improve our overall health and well-being". Massachusetts, for example, has 547 mental health providers per 100,000 people, while Alabama has 85 per 100,000.

In the past 10 years, drug deaths increased 98% from 5.0 to 9.9 deaths per 100,000 population.
