Israeli army destroys incomplete tunnel from Gaza

Israeli army destroys incomplete tunnel from Gaza

The Israeli military carried out a number of retaliatory strikes against alleged Hamas positions overnight following a series of rocket attacks.

Islamic Jihad's armed wing said two of its members were killed, Haaretz reported.

The move, which Israel believes Hamas was responsible for, was dubbed "aggressive acts" by the IDF.

Residents are reporting hearing multiple explosions and that Iron Dome launched at least two intercept missiles. Two were shot dead by the Israeli army while protesting, while two others died in Israeli air strikes in response to rocket fire from Gaza. No injuries or damage were reported in Israel.

The rocket, fired at about 11:30 p.m., triggered early warning sirens in Ashkelon, the Lachish region and in the area around the Gaza Strip.

Israel has repeatedly hit the Gaza Strip over the last week, following the decision last Wednesday by US President Donald Trump to recognise Jerusalem as Israel's capital.

Two members of the militant Islamist Hamas movement were killed in night-time Israeli airstrikes on the Gaza Strip at the weekend in response to rocket attacks on the southern Israeli town of Sderot. The group vowed revenge on Sunday.

Israel Defense Forces spokesman Jonathan Conricus said the tunnel originated in the city of Khan Younis, was more than half a mile long and stretched "hundreds of meters" into Israeli territory.

Hamas last week called for a new intifada against Israel and urged Palestinians to confront soldiers and settlers, allowing thousands of Gazans to confront Israeli troops at the Gaza border fence in recent days.
