Feuding with Amazon, Google pulls YouTube from Fire TV and Echo Show

Feuding with Amazon, Google pulls YouTube from Fire TV and Echo Show

A person familiar with Google's thinking on the matter told Engadget that a big point of contention had been the fact that Amazon implemented what was essentially a hacked version of YouTube on both the Echo Show and Fire TV.

Google and Amazon have been embroiled in a tit for tat dispute for quite some time now, with each company taking pot shots at the other's source of revenue.

Both companies should reach at an agreement and resolve these issues to avoid inconvenience to consumers. Sans YouTube, Amazon looks to be banking on its in-house services and against the Chcolate Factory's built-in customer base.

YouTube was first removed from the Echo Show back in September, which Amazon sought to resolve by directing users hoping to use the site to its web version, rather than app. Google has now pulled the plug on the sneaky workaround, and will be removing YouTube from Fire TV from 1 January 2018.

It added that Amazon has stopped selling some products from Nest, a connected-device maker that is Google's sister firm under Alphabet.

"We've been trying to reach agreement with Amazon to give consumers access to each other's products and services", Google said in a statement.

The stakes are high: many in the technology industry expect that interacting with computers by voice will become widespread, and it is unclear if Amazon, Google or another company will dominate the space. However, Amazon probably isn't all that excited about Google competing with them in hardware on their own store, though I'd imagine Amazon's customers aren't going to be happy if YouTube isn't a part of their shiny new device's ecosystem. Google shares and Amazon shares both closed higher in Tuesday's United States trading session.

In response, Amazon said Google had set a "disappointing precedent". Amazon also doesn't make its Prime Video service available for Google Cast. This shows that Google wants to impose its own rules on how YouTube is rendered on Amazon's devices, but that doesn't seem to imply that Google is seeking control.
