Yankees out of the running to land Shohei Ohtani

On Sunday, New York Yankees general manager Brian Cashman informed reporters that Ohtani's representatives told the team they will not be invited to make a presentation for the starter/slugger.

But we also now know that distance from Japan seemingly played a role in Ohtani's pairing down of cities as well. "But I did get a sense that I can't change that we're a big market and I can't change we're in the East". I can't speak for them. MLB.com and MLB Network insiders reported that the D-backs, Mets, Brewers, Pirates, Red Sox and, most interestingly, the Yankees, were out of the running.

The 23-year-old Ohtani, a star pitcher and hitter who must sign with a major league team by December 22, has begun informing finalists of their meetings, which could run from this Tuesday to Friday.

Ohtani has been put up for bid by the Pacific League's Nippon Ham Fighters for the maximum $20 million posting fee.

The Dodgers are expected to meet with Shohei Ohtani this week as the recruitment of the Japanese two-way star intensifies, according to people familiar with the situation.

Ohtani is limited to a minor league contract because of restrictions imposed by the MLB collective bargaining agreement. Instead, he'll be posted and teams will be limited to offering bonuses from their pool of worldwide signing money.

According to reports from several baseball writers, including Jeff Passon of Yahoo, Ohtani is narrowing down his list of possible teams and the Giants are one of them.

The Texas Rangers have the most bonus pool money left to offer at $3.535 million. Ohtani-mania, however, appears will not be coming to Denver unless he is sitting in the visitor's dugout or bullpen.
