House Arrest Ends As Manafort's Bail Is Modified

Paul Manafort, U.S. President Donald Trump's former campaign chairman, has agreed to an $11.65 million bail agreement with the special counsel investigating ties between the Trump campaign and Russia, Manafort's lawyer says.

He and his wife have handed over their passports, his lawyer said in Thursday's court filing.

Manafort, an global political consultant, has surrendered his passports and agreed he won't travel overseas.

Manafort would have to forfeit all four properties if he violates the terms of his bail.

Paul Manafort has reached a $11 million bail agreement with special counsel Robert Mueller's office that would allow him to be released from home arrest and Global Positioning System monitoring, according to court documents filed on Thursday.




The other three properties are a condo that Manafort owns in Virginia, along with homes in Florida and the Hamptons.

The deal took weeks longer than the "48 hours" prosecutor Greg Andres predicted in a November 6 hearing, and came after both sides sparred over the extent and disclosure of Manafort's assets. They questioned his claimed $28 million of assets or net worth, stating he previously reported $136 million in assets in financial documents in May 2016. He turned over his three US passports to prosecutors after his arrest.

A docket in the criminal case against Manafort and Gates, unsealed earlier this month, alleged that both men had received "millions of dollars" from Ukrainian and Russian oligarchs that would allow them "to live comfortably abroad" and therefore make them a flight risk. Manafort got additional passports to apply for visas when one was being used or believed to be lost, and traveled with a phone in his brother's name to protect the confidentiality of his clients.

The charges filed against Mr. Manafort and Mr. Gates were not connected to their work for the Trump campaign, rather the charges stemmed from their failure to report years of lobbying activity done on behalf of a Ukrainian political party and the laundering of money received for the work.
