16 hurt fleeing false terror alert in London's Oxford Street shopping

16 hurt fleeing false terror alert in London's Oxford Street shopping

One woman was injured in the rush, police said, but it was minor.

"Officers are on scene and dealing", London's Metropolitan Police said on Twitter.

There was confusion in central London on Friday evening as armed police responded to an incident on Oxford Street.

Mattias Nilsson, 45, said he was in town with friends for a Premier League soccer match and was near the station when he heard people shouting, "Shooting!"

The post immediately sparked outrage on social media after police revealed there was no evidence of shots being fired or casualties.

A witness said the area around the station had been cleared of people and traffic.

British Transport Police said there was "a significant level of panic", adding that it was "examining the circumstances of the incident which resulted in the station being evacuated".

The Oxford Circus station is at the heart of London's shopping hub, Regent Street, and is only minutes away from Piccadilly Circus.

The British Transport Police said it believed there had been an altercation between two men on the platform before the scare.

Shocking footage from the scene shows as Black Friday shoppers ran screaming from the scene, hiding in nearby shops and buildings.

Around 4:30 p.m. local time on Friday, armed police rushed to respond to multiple reports of shots fired in the area. "People turned around in a bit of pandemonium", he said. "The station is now closed, please avoid the area at this time", they said. A British pop singer, Ollie Murs, tweeted that he was in Selfridges and that shots had been fired there.

Paying tribute to the "swift response" of emergency services, mayor Sadiq Khan urged Londoners to "remain vigilant and don't panic".

"There were people running in all directions".

He said: "It is vital that we are not complacent - if in doubt it is always best to err on the side of caution and call the police on 999".

Britain's terror threat level is now at Severe, meaning that an attack is considered highly likely by security services.
