Rahul Gandhi to become congress president on 19th December

Rahul Gandhi to become congress president on 19th December

At a meeting of the Congress Working Committee on Monday, a decision to make Rahul the official leader of the party was taken after all state bodies passed unanimous resolutions towards the same.

Hours after Congress President Sonia Gandhi accused the BJP-led NDA Government of "sabotaging" the Winter Session of Parliament, Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley responded with equal vigour, saying the main Opposition party had delayed the Parliament sittings on numerous occasions in the past.

The party has announced the timeline for its internal election, widely seen as a formality with leaders endorsing Rahul Gandhi's name for the top job.

However, it is clear now that Rahul Gandhi will be Congress president before the Gujarat elections.

Earlier in October, party president Sonia Gandhi had also hinted that Rahul's elevation as party chief "will be done soon".

The Congress party constitution allows the CWC, with around 2,000 members drawn from various states across the country, to appoint the party president.

Gandhi attributed unemployment, rising inflation, falling exports, demonetisation and GST to the "tremendous suffering" of millions of Indians. He is most likely to take over the grand old party by 5 December. Her role will be defined once Rahulji is elected the Congress President. "It is time to pass on the baton of the party affairs into the able hands of Rahul Gandhi, who is mature and competent enough to lead the Congress into the next Lok Sabha elections", Amarinder told reporters in Chandigarh.

Yet Mr Gandhi faces many challenges in reviving Congress as it has been struggling since a massive defeat in the 2014 General Election and Mr Modi continues to be popular.

PAAS leader Hardik Patel even cancelled his rally in Rajkot where he was expected to announce a possible alliance with the Congress. We can not conceive that her guidance, her able leadership will not be available.

In other developments, Congress President Sonia Gandhi came down heavily on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, accusing him of casting a dark shadow on India's Parliamentary democracy by sabotaging the Winter Session of Parliament on flimsy grounds.
