Wenger: Cazorla injury 'the worst I've known'

Wenger: Cazorla injury 'the worst I've known'

Arsenal's French coach, Arsene Wenger, described Santi Cazorla's ankle injury as "the worst" he has ever seen, but was hopeful that the Spanish global could return to the pitch in January.

Cazorla, 32, has not played for Arsenal since October 2016 and has undergone eight operations to address a longstanding Achilles problem.

Wenger will be hoping Iwobi will be able to replicate his goal scoring form for Arsenal in this weekend's North London derby against Tottenham Hotspurs.

"What started with a pain in the Achilles tendon was then worse and worse", revealed the Gunners coach.

The Spain global told Marca this month that doctors told him at one point he may never walk again and that his foot may even need to be amputated, but he is targeting a return in January, having been left out of Arsenal's Premier League squad for the first half of the season.

'I hope he comes back. Originally a speedy winger, Walcott has often tried to push the idea that he could be Arsenal's central striker; basically the same move that Thierry Henry made - one that turned him into a club legend and one of the best players in the world.

Arsenal midfielder Alex Iwobi has hailed injured teammate Santi Cazorla as the best player he has ever played with. He tries to practise.

Cazorla has been limited to just 129 appearances for Arsenal since joining from Malaga in 2012.

"I have a big choice to make every time, big decisions to make up front", said Wenger, whose side sit in sixth place in the Premier League table, four points below third-place Spurs. Arsene Wenger even went more than a decade without losing a league game to their cross-town rivals, between November 1999 and April 2010. I never thought I'd have to quit - but the doctors told me: 'If you manage to get back to walking with your son in the garden you should settle for that.
