DC Comics Editor Eddie Berganza Finally Fired After Sexual Assault Allegations Resurface

DC Comics Editor Eddie Berganza Finally Fired After Sexual Assault Allegations Resurface

DC Comics announced that they are suspending Eddie Berganza, one of their veteran comic book editors, who is now facing accusations of sexual harassment from several women.

"Warner Bros and DC Entertainment have terminated the employment of DC Comics Group Editor Eddie Berganza", DC Entertainment said in a statement to SYFY WIRE.

Berganza started work for DC in 1992 and worked on numerous high-profile comics, including the recent Dark Nights: Metal. Berganza's reputation of sexual misconduct was well known within the comic industry, but was brought to the attention of the general public when Buzzfeed wrote a lengthy article about the former editor's behavior late last week, leading to some extra scrutiny placed on DC and Warner Bros.

While some people have praised DC for parting ways with Berganza, his firing has caused some controversy online.

In 2010, former DC editor Janelle Asselin organized a group of employees to report a joint complaint to HR about Berganza, who continued to rise through the ranks and was named executive editor later that year. Cartoonist Joan Hilty also said Berganza kissed and groped her at the same bar in the early 2000s.

Five women (one anonymously) accused Berganza of sexual harassment, and other sources say that the editor has been accused of such behavior going back several decades. In the end, DC Comics made the right decision, but many are asking why this didn't happen sooner. Every woman who complained to the company regarding this matter has since left DC.

The New York office had a reputation within the industry as being a hard place for women to work under Berganza.

"There will be a prompt and yet careful review into next steps as it relates to the allegations against him, and the concerns our talent, employees and fans have shared", the company initially said. DC continues to be extremely committed to creating a safe and secure working environment for our employees and everyone involved in the creation of our comic books. DC's silence regarding the allegations against Berganza was perceived by many within comics culture as tacit support for him over the women whose complaints were reportedly ignored.
