Morocco, Tunisia take different paths to WC

Morocco, Tunisia take different paths to WC

Morocco's victory over the West African giants means three countries from North Africa made it to Russian Federation with Egypt and Tunisia having qualified already.

Morocco and Tunisia qualified for the World Cup on Saturday, taking Africa's last two places.

Tunisia qualified for the World Cup after winning the group with 14 points.

Street celebrations in Brussels by Moroccan soccer fans marking their teams return to the World Cup for the first time in two decades turned violent on Saturday night, November 11.

Morocco defeated Ivory Coast 2-0 on Saturday night in Abidjan to qualifying for the 2018 World Cup in Russian Federation, the country's first appearance at the finals since 1998.

Tunisia last played at the World Cup in 2006.

However, it was the visitors, who sealed an emphatic win as Dirar grabbed the opener in the 25th minute with after his tricky cross beat Sylvain Gbohouo, in goal for the Ivoirians.

Both teams needed a point to qualify for the global soccer phenomenon which will be hosted by Russian Federation.

It was to prove a costly miss for the home side, who had to win after beginning the match one point behind a Moroccan team coached by former Ivorian handler, Frenchman Herve Renard.

Morocco needed only a draw from their final Group C game to finish top of the standings in the African preliminaries, ahead of the Ivorians, who had to win to clinch a fourth successive World Cup finals appearance.

African champions Cameroon also secured a 2-2 draw away to Zambia in their inconsequential final Group B World Cup qualifier in Ndola thanks to a late goal from defender Yaya Banana.

Tunisia survived some nervous moments in Rades as Libya finished strongly.
