Magnitude 7.2 natural disaster shakes Halabjah, Iraq

A magnitude 7.4 natural disaster hit an area at the Iranian-Iraqi border on Sunday, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Center (EMSC) reported.

The quake was said to have a magnitude of 7.3, although earlier reports said it had been 7.2, according to Daily Mail.

Eight villages were damaged in Iran from the quake, state television reported.

State TV said at least six people were killed and many others injured in the town of Qasr-e Shirin.

The temblor was centered 32 kilometers (20 miles) southwest of Halabja, Iraq, and had a depth of 33.9 kilometers (21 miles), the US Geological Survey said.

Many residents in the Iraqi capital Baghdad rushed out of houses and tall buildings in panic.

"I felt like I was on a boat, I thought it was vertigo".

It struck the area of Azgaleh in Kermanshah province at around 21:48 local time on Sunday. Both cities are hundreds of miles away.

CNN reports that at least 6 people have been reported dead in Iraq, and dozens more are injured.

The quake's epicentre was in Penjwin in the north-western Sulaimaniyah province within the semi-autonomous Kurdistan region very close to the Iranian border, according to an Iraqi meteorology official.
