United States to end protected immigration status for Nicaraguans

United States to end protected immigration status for Nicaraguans

Dr. Delgado made her statement after the announcement by the Department of Homeland Security that ended Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for 2,550 Nicaraguan immigrants and delays for six months a decision for 57,000 Honduran who came to the U.S. under the TPS program following natural disasters in their countries.

Temporary Protected Status (TPS) will end for 2,500 Nicaraguans who had been living in the USA under the program, and will have 14 months to leave the country, the Washington Post reported Monday.

Immigrants from Honduras and Nicaragua were granted temporary protected status in 1999 as a result of Hurricane Mitch.

It has been repeatedly renewed since.

The elimination of TPS protection for these groups would affect hundreds of thousands of people. "These are people who are working, who are paying their taxes, and we hope that when the time comes when they follow this process in the USA, that we will have the opportunity to have a renewal of the Temporary Protection Status or some way to have our countrymen continue to live in this country".

Haitians and Salvadorans are also waiting to hear what the USA is going to do with their TPS designation.

Under the programme, they are allowed to work and many have raised families in the United States.

Acting Secretary of Homeland Security Elaine Duke said the end date would provide for "an orderly transition". Their protection was set to expire January 5. She said that there is a lot uncertainty, especially for those with little options to adjust their status and get permanent residency.

TPS for Nicaraguans will end on January 5, 2019, and Hondurans have received a grace period until July 5 of next year.

Ms Duke said she needed more information.

At the same time, the United States administration extended the TPS for six months, until July 2018, for the same reason for some 86,160 Hondurans.

But the Department of Homeland Security already warned in its statement that a termination of the programme was "possible".

The decision, announced by Homeland Security Secretary Elaine Duke late on Monday, will affect 2,500 Nicaraguans who have legally lived and worked in the country for almost two decades. The Post reports the decision was keenly observed by the roughly 200,000 Salvadorans (here following 2001 earthquakes) and 50,000 Haitians (2010 quake) whose own TPS designation expires in 2018; the latter group will learn their fate by November 23, reports Politico. Although an announcement about El Salvador isn't expected for another few weeks (January 8, 2018), she said she's uneasy as she awaits the announcement about TPS. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said last week that the conditions in Central America and Haiti no longer justify the need for protections under TPS.

"The administration understands there are a number of individuals who have been in TPS status, potentially for 20 years, and given the lengthy period of the status here, [knows] that congressmen want to find a solution to find a more permanent status versus this 18-month to 18-month temporary fix", the senior administration official said.

Congressional members, including Republican lawmakers, also called on the Trump administration to continue TPS.
