Missile fired from Yemen intercepted by Saudi Arabia north-east of capital

A ballistic missile launched from Yemen was intercepted northeast of Saudi Arabia's capital, Riyadh, according to local media.

Passengers at the airport, which British Airways flies direct to from the United Kingdom, said they heard an explosion.

Saudi forces this year have reportedly shot down several missiles from the Yemeni rebels on multiple occasion and is now leading a military campaign against them.

The missile was destroyed near Riyadh's King Khaled global airport and was said to be of "limited size".

Houthi-run Saba News in Yemen reported that the missile was a Burkan H2 and that the airport had been the target.

Government forces repelled several attacks by Houthi rebels and allied forces of former president Ali Abdullah Saleh in the province over the past 24 hours, military spokesman Col. Abdul-Basit al-Bahr told Anadolu Agency.

Saudi Arabia's Civil Aviation Authority confirmed on Twitter that the missile had been brought down near the International King Khalid Airport in Riyadh.

"We have the right to respond and bombard with missiles those perpetrating daily massacres against our people, the latest being the massacre in a market".

From the border with Yemen to the capital of Saudi Arabia, about 500 km.

A Saudi-led coalition has been bombing Houthis and their allies in Yemen since March 2015 in a war that has devastated Yemen and killed thousands of people.

A cholera outbreak has claimed more than 2,100 lives in Yemen since April as hospitals struggle to secure supplies amid a coalition air and sea blockade.
