Who Is Ryan Nash? 'Hero' Police Officer Shot NYC Attacker

Witnesses told the NYPD the suspect, identified as 29-year-old Sayfullo Saipov - an Uzbek national from Tampa, Florida - shouted "Allahu Akbar", or "God is great" in Arabic when he jumped out of the truck. "He thinks it's something that - why he joined the police department", said Police Commissioner James O'Neill. The weapons turned out to be a paintball gun and a pellet gun.

Ryan Nash, the police officer credited with stopping the New York City terror attack.

O'Neill and Mayor Bill de Blasio said they visited Nash at the hospital after the attack. "He was very humble about what he did, but what he did was extraordinary", the mayor said Wednesday. "And it gave people such faith and such appreciation in our police force".

If not for the actions of a quick-thinking five-year veteran of the NYPD, 1st Precinct Officer Ryan Nash, the death toll could have been even higher.

NYPD officer Ryan Nash was reportedly responding to a report of a suicidal 17-year-old girl at a school in lower Manhattan when a rental truck started ploughing through people on a bicycle lane yesterday.

Police investigate the scene at a bike path in lower Manhattan after a motorist drove onto the path near the World Trade Center memorial, striking and killing several people on October 31, 2017, in NY.

Officer Nash was treated and released at New York Presbyterian Hospital for tinnitus, or ringing in the ears, following the shooting. Nash and his partner, Officer John Hasiotis, had been summoned to help with a student who was in the nurses' office and had indicated that he wanted to kill himself.

In Medford, Long Island, where Nash lives with his girlfriend in a Cape Cod-style house that's adorned with signs of welcome, shamrocks and the American flag, neighbors are gushing with pride and praise for the officer.

The four officers rushed out of the school, turning east toward the highway and confronting Saipov on the street. Nash was the closest, and fired nine times from his department-issued service gun.

The civilian kicked the guns out of Saipov's hands. Investigators said they later found a cellphone connected to Saipov that had Islamic State group propaganda.
