Putin rallies support for Iran nuclear deal

Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed support for the Iran nuclear deal on an official visit to Tehran on Wednesday, in what Iran's leadership has interpreted as a rejection of US policy.

On August 8, a trilateral summit of the heads of state of Azerbaijan, Iran and Russian Federation was held in Baku.

Russian Federation is one of the signatories to the landmark nuclear accord under which Tehran agreed to curb its atomic program in exchange for sanctions relief.

"We discussed different issues in the sector of stability, fighting crime and terrorism".

Tehran and Moscow "have been working productively and managed to coordinate positions on the issue", Putin said.

"No one is paying attention to the Americans' rhetoric", Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Ebrahim Rahimpur said Tuesday.

President Donald Trump refused to recertify the deal in October and has threatened to withdraw the United States if what he calls serious flaws in the accord can not be fixed by us lawmakers and USA allies. Our cooperation can isolate America.

Putin will also have a meeting with Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

Russian Federation has criticized Trump's disavowal of the nuclear agreement, which has opened a 60-day window for the U.S. Congress to act to reimpose economic sanctions on Iran.

The Kremlin strongman will also take part in a three-way summit with Rouhani and the leader of ex-Soviet Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev aimed at bolstering economic ties between their energy-rich nations.

Aliyev opened a similar rail project on Monday that links the Azeri capital, Baku, to Turkey via Georgia, offering a transport corridor to move goods between China and Europe through central Asia, in competition with existing routes through Russian Federation and Iran.

Putin is to hold separate talks with Rouhani and supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, as Russian Federation and Iran cooperate on a range of issues including the conflict in Syria.
