SpaceX's Falcon 9 delivers satellite into orbit lands on droneship

The Falcon 9 rocket took off with the Koreasat 5A communications satellite at 3:34 p.m. EDT (1934 GMT) Monday from pad 39A at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida, turning east as it surpassed the speed of sound and climbed into a clear autumn sky with 1.7 million pounds of thrust from its nine Merlin 1D main engines.

The SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket launched the Koresat 5A communications satellite for South Korea, SpaceX officials said.

The satellite was deployed to a geostationary transfer orbit about 36 minutes after liftoff.

SpaceX's landing record now stands at 19 successes in 24 attempts, 12 on droneships and 7 at the Cape Canaveral Air Force Station. The company has also managed to re-fly previously launched and landed boosters, proving out its reusability even more.

The satellite is created to replace an earlier version, called Koreasat 5, which launched in 2006. So while these Falcon 9 landings seem somewhat routine, they serve a much larger objective in the fabric of spaceflight today.

In the past ten months, the company has launched 15 space missions successfully.

California-based space firm SpaceX is all set to launch its next cargo mission to the International Space Station (ISS) in December, and according to the media, it will employ a preflown Dragon capsule. Should weather or some kind of technical issue get in the way, SpaceX will try to launch again tomorrow at the same time. When the SLC-40 was out of commission, most of the east coast flights of the Falcon 9 were kicked off from Complex 39A at located NASA's Kennedy Space Center.

The satellite will provide television broadcast and other communication services over South Korea, Japan, the Philippines, Guam, Indochina and South Asia.

KT SAT aspires to be one of the leading satellite operators in the highly competitive Asian market. KT Sat's total fleet consists of Koreasat-6, Koreasat-7, the ABS-2/Koreasat-8 condosat, Koreasat-5A, and, for as long as it lasts, Koreasat-5.
