'Hopeless' Congress shamelessly joined voice for 'Kashmir azadi': Modi

'Hopeless' Congress shamelessly joined voice for 'Kashmir azadi': Modi

Finance Minister Arun Jaitley on Saturday told reporters that the "party's position with regard to azadi or greater autonomy for Jammu and Kashmir was against the national interest".

Gupta criticised the Congress leader's remarks as "opportunistic, contradictory, misleading and motivated".

"I think it is quite shocking and disgusting that P Chidambaram today speaks about breaking the Union of India into pieces and supports those who actually murdered our security forces just so that they can play havoc with law and order situation in J&K", she said.

"I am not surprised because Chidambaram reflects the Congress mentality".

PM's remark came a day after P Chidambaram said that most people of Kashmir want autonomy.

As the comment drew stinging criticism from the BJP, the Congress fielded its chief spokesperson Randeep Singh Surjewala to distance the party from Mr Chidambaram's statement. The Congress has distanced itself from the statement and described it as the "opinion of an individual".

In a direct attack on Congress leader P Chidambaram, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Sunday, said that those in power till yesterday have, without shame, joined the voice for "Kashmir azadi".

Calling for a political initiative, the party said a singular focus on military and operational mechanism to deal with the Kashmir issue "in the absence of a political initiative" is a "dangerous" approach and continues to alienate the people.

Chidambaram had said in poll-bound Gujarat's Rajkot that when the people of Jammu and Kashmir ask for "azadi", a lot of them mean greater autonomy. It is very much within the Constitution. He termed the Congress the "architect of the present mess" in the state.

The party said the Kashmir issue should be solved through a sustained dialogue with both internal and external stakeholders, an apparent reference to separatists and Pakistan.
