Egypt: 55 policemen killed in gunbattle with militants

Egypt: 55 policemen killed in gunbattle with militants

However, the Ministry of Interior today said that 16 policemen, including 11 officers, were killed in the clashes.

Medics and security sources gave a death toll of 54 among police.

The exchange of gunfire took place on Friday in the al-Wahat al-Bahriya district in the Giza governorate, about 135 kilometers, from the Egyptian capital.

However, the statement added, terrorists started firing at the security forces with heavy machine guns from all directions as they approached their hideout, causing 12 officers and four police conscripts dead, 13 injured and one missing.

The interior ministry said a "number" of policemen had been killed as well as some militants, but did not elaborate. He also commanded the armed forces and police for saving Egypt over the past years from meeting the same fate of countries plagued with terrorism, the presidency statement said.

"We learned with sorrow that yesterday (Oct. 20) many security forces who have been attacked by terrorists in the city of Giza in Egypt have lost their lives and were wounded", a statement said.

No terrorist group claimed responsibility of the attack.

The country has been in a heightened state of turmoil and violence since the military overthrew President Mohammed Morsi of the Muslim Brotherhood, the country's first democratically-elected president, in mid-2013 following mass protests against his rule.

The Muslim Brotherhood, once Egypt's largest opposition movement, has long denied involvement in the attacks on the authorities.

Terror attacks in Egypt used to be centered in North Sinai before spreading nationwide and killing hundreds of policemen and soldiers over the past few years.
