Missing Pak journalist rescued after over two years

Zeenat Shahzadi, who disappeared in 2015 while working on the case of a missing Indian national in Pakistan, has been recovered by security forces, officials said on Friday.

Justice (retd) Javed Iqbal, who is heading the Commission for Missing Persons, confirmed Shehzadi's recovery to BBC Urdu.

The abducted female journalist Zeenat Shahzadi has been recovered from the border areas adjoining Afghanistan, two years after she was abducted from Lahore.

Iqbal said some "non-state actors" had kidnapped her, adding that tribal leaders in Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa played an important role in her recovery, Dawn reported. She was allegedly kidnapped by unidentified men while she was on her way to work in an autorickshaw from her home in Lahore on August 19, 2015. "My sister is missing and my younger brother (Saddam) who was deeply attached to her hanged himself after losing hope to get reunited with her", Shahzadi's brother Salman Latif had told PTI.

The security agencies in Pakistan to admit that Ansari was in their custody.

Zeenat Shahzadi was due to appear before the Commission of Inquiry on Enforced Disappearances on August 24, 2015 to give a testimony about Hamid Ansari's disappearance but was abducted five days earlier.

Hamid Ansari, the Indian citizen was arrested in Pakistan in 2012 for illegally entering the country.

My sister has not committed any crime in helping an Indian national.

Shahzadi's brother Saddam Hussain had reportedly committed suicide in March previous year.

The Zeenat had however informed her parents that she was taken away forcibly by the intelligence agencies of Paksitan while she was investigating disappearance of Hamid Nehal Ansari A resident of Mumbai.

Zeenat Shahzadi was trying to help out Hamid Ansari who was in police custody for illegally entering Pakistan to meet a girl. I called back and Zeenat introduced herself and said that she would want to help me. "I don't even know what what condition she was in for the past two years and what she might have gone through", Ms. Ansari said.
