Trump And NFL Debate Over National Anthem Kneeling

Trump And NFL Debate Over National Anthem Kneeling

During the multi-day press event, Goodell tried to tamp down the outrage, declaring that the National Football League believes all players should stand for the anthem but stops short on disciplining the players who do so.

Maybe Jacksonville Jaguars President Mark Lamping should spend more time learning about and fighting against police brutality, poverty and a lack of adequate health care in communities of color in Florida than apologizing to the City of Jacksonville's director of military affairs and local military representatives for Jaguars players' kneeling during the national anthem before their game in London on September 24 versus the Baltimore Ravens.

"We want our players to be standing and we will continue to encourage them to get up", he said, adding that the members of the meeting had not discussed any possible sanctions against players knelt.

Goodell also said there were only "six or seven" players protesting.

Goodell said he understood the concerns of the players - who are seeking to draw attention to racial injustice and police brutality - but he hopes the league can bring the total number of protesters down to zero. The meeting between owners and players ended with no agreement on the thorny issue of protests during "The Star-Spangled Banner", which has bitterly divided the sport and fans of the game.

On Tuesday, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell expressed his belief that everyone "should" stand for the national anthem but noted that the league would not institute a rule to force players to do so. "Issues in our communities, to make our communities better". McNally said, "Disrespect for our national anthem is never welcome".

The president has called the protests disrespectful, and has urged supporters to walk out of games when players kneel during the anthem.

For now, that means a continuing dialogue with players about social issues and no requirement that they stand for the anthem.
