10000-15000 Rohingyas flee to Bangladesh in 48 hours

10000-15000 Rohingyas flee to Bangladesh in 48 hours

"There are now nearly 1 million Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh: the 582,000 (who fled Myanmar since August 25 this year) joined the 400,000 who had already fled there following previous periods of targeted attacks, notably in 2012 and 2016".

A United Nations team took witness statements from Rohingya refugees last month, and another human rights mission is now on the ground, gathering evidence from some of the 582,000 Rohingya who have fled into Bangladesh in the last two months.

"Inhuman torture is going on in Rakhine", fellow refugee Abdur Rashid told BenarNews, adding that the "Myanmar army has been creating an artificial food crisis" to "force Rohingya to flee".

Tillerson, who is set to visit South Asia next week, is urging the Myanmar government to improve humanitarian access to the population in western Rakhine state.

Yet the sheer number of Rohingya refugees negates the disclaimer. "Every minute counts given the fragile condition they're arriving in", UNHCR spokesperson Andrej Mahecic said in Geneva.

"As of this morning they are still squatting in the paddy fields of Anjuman Para village in Bangladesh", he said.

Myanmar denies citizenship to the Rohingyas, considering them illegal immigrants from Bangladesh, and imposes multiple restrictions on them, including restrictions on their movement.

"Maybe U.N. Security Council members can raise this matter for it to be made a resolution so that finally when the Rohingya return, there is a U.N. monitoring team there in place", he said.

Their stories have shocked the world globe, with accounts of Myanmar soldiers and Buddhist mobs murdering and raping civilians before torching their villages to the ground.

On Monday, the European Union announced it was reviewing military cooperation with Myanmar, as the bloc called on Myanmar to bring to justice the perpetrators of crimes against the Rohingya.

Hundreds of thousands of Rohingya have fled Myanmar since August 25, when the military launched a crackdown decried by the United Nations as "ethnic cleansing".

U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights Zeid Ra'ad al-Hussein has called the situation "a textbook example of ethnic cleansing", but he has not used the word genocide. "All of them need the lifesaving basics - shelter, food, water, vaccinations, protection - not tomorrow or next week or next month, but right now", she said.
