Microsoft Unveils All New Surface Book 2 Laptop

Microsoft Unveils All New Surface Book 2 Laptop

Coinciding with the official release of the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update on October 17, Microsoft unveiled the Surface Book 2, now with a 15-inch model. The disclaimer here is that number only describes continuous video playback, but Apple rates both the 13-inch and 15-inch MacBook Pro at up to 10 hours of video playback, so it's still a jump if true.

Surface Book 2 models come with Intel's eight-gen Core CPU, up to 16GB of RAM, and up to NVIDIA GeForce 1060 graphics inside. The company claims that the Surface Book 2 offers "five-times" better graphics performance as opposed to its predecessor.

Surface Book 2 13.5-inch models will be available to purchase on November 16 though Microsoft Stores, MicrosoftStore.com and select retailers in the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Hong Kong, China, Japan, United Kingdom, France, Germany and Austria. It will be available in mid-November, in both a 13.5-inch and 15-inch version, and have the ability to run heavy-duty creative software such as the Adobe suite and play a multitude of video games.

Laptop Mode - Traditional laptop experience.

As for ports, the Surface Book 2 comes with two USB 3.1 ports, one SDXC card reader, a 3.5mm headphones jack and Microsoft proprietary Surface Connect charging port. Theres also a single USB Type-C port that supports USB 3.1 speeds, while dongles makes it possible to use it for HDMI and DisplayPort.

The Surface Book 2's 3:2 display has always been the star of the show.

Microsoft says its new hardware is powerful enough to "fuel the next wave of computing across mixed reality, artificial intelligence, machine learning, and immersive gaming".

Initially available in the USA only, the Surface Book 2 is priced at $1,499 for the 13-inch, and $2,499 for the 15-inch version, with preorders beginning on November 9. Nevertheless, all models feature USB Type-C port.

Internal graphics have improved from the relatively anemic Nvidia GeForce GTX 965M in last year's model to a Pascal-based Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060 discrete GPU. It's very possible that Microsoft will use their London Keynote at the end of this month to introduce the new Windows 10 + Qualcomm 2-in-1 Always-On hybrid ARM based notebooks from partners HP, Lenovo, Asustek and more.

Looking at the specs sheet, it seems that the Surface Book 2 is one of the most powerful convertible laptops so far. Unlike the 13-inch model, all configurations of the 15-inch version are powered by an 8 Gen Intel Core i7-8650U with 4.2 GHz maximum Turbo frequency. Microsoft compares its new Surface Book 2 with the latest MacBook Pro in the announcement.

The exterior of the Surface Book 2, aside from the ports, is almost identical to original Surface Book. "The 15" Book 2 is 0.9" (2.3 cm) thick and weighs 4.2 lb (1.9 kg) all told.

The hinges are created to increase the horizontal depth of the base of the laptop.

Pricing starts at at $1499 for a 13-inch, while quad-core 15-inch versions will cost from $2499.

Pre-orders for the Surface Book 2 go live on the 9 of November in the USA as well as a few other select countries around the world.
