Senator Susan Collins Announces She Will Not Run for Governor

Susan Collins, known as one of the last remaining "moderates" in the U.S. Senate, announced Friday that she will not run for governor of ME, ending months of speculation.

The announcement was met by a standing ovation from the audience of 230, almost double the previously most attended Chamber breakfast.

"I want to continue to play a key role in advancing policies that strengthen our economy, help our hard-working families, improve our health care system, and bring peace and stability to a violent and troubled world", she said.

Maine Republicans have touted their recent success at electing candidates to Congress, the governorship and the state Legislature, where the GOP maintains control of the Senate.

The 64-year-old Collins announced earlier Friday that she wouldn't be running for governor because she believes she can do more for ME by remaining in the U.S. Senate.

She put an end to months of speculation announcing she would not run for governor of Maine.

Senator Colliins says she's "bridge between the two sides of the aisle", one reason she is staying in Senate. The work she does for ME - while rarely easy and often understated - is a reflection of her work ethic and her infinite energy to serve the people of our state.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell is praising Maine Sen.

Contemplating whether to give up her seniority in the United States Senate and the influence it grants, has been a major factor in her decision.

Susan Collins explaining her vote against Obamacare repeal bills: It was designed "behind closed doors" and "by 13 men" btw.

Her announcement was welcomed by supporters who view her as an important check on President Donald Trump, with whom she was at odds on the GOP's health care proposals.

The pro-abortion Republican senator who sabotaged a bill to defund the Planned Parenthood abortion business will remain in the Senate.

Ultimately, it appears to have been the environment in Washington that's convinced Collins to stay.

Had Collins made a decision to run for governor she would have joined a crowded field to replace two-term Republican Gov. Paul LePage, who can not run again because of term limits.

The party primaries are in June and the general election is November 2018.
