Police officer killed in raid on GJM chief's hideout

Police officer killed in raid on GJM chief's hideout

The West Bengal government has promised a job to the father of the sub-inspector who was killed by alleged supporters of the GJM chief Bimal Gurung today in a forest near Darjeeling, where Gurung was supected to be hiding. The people of the hills are peace-loving, they are not with Gurung and his politics of violence and bloodshed. Six AK-47 rifles, a nine-mm pistol, almost 500 rounds of cartridges, explosives and bombs were recovered from the spot later.

They were searching for the head of the party Bimal Gurung, who has been on the run since government prosecutors brought terrorism charges against him over a 104-day protest that crippled the region and left almost a dozen people dead. The GJM faction has alleged that the arms recovered may have been planted by the state police. A better strategy for the operation in the dawn may have avoided the casualty, sources indicated.

The police conducted the raid after getting information that Gurung was hiding in the area, during which the GJM leader's supporters fired and pelted stones, police said. "It is sending police personnel who do not have proper training to capture Gurung", Ghosh said. "But we would make sacrifice and we would not let their blue-print succeed".

Early on Friday, police raided the area. They are are claiming that the GJM supremo had links with the Maoists and insurgent groups in the north-east. "And since his father is not that old we have made a decision to provide him with a job at the school department", Chatterjee said.

"After so many days of an indefinite shutdown, the people are happy that peace is returning to the hills". He tried to enter Darjeeling and police went for him. Earlier a home guard had died of injuries sustained in a low intensity blast near Kalimpong police station.
