The League of Nations: Ukraine starts in division B

The League of Nations: Ukraine starts in division B

With the group stages of World Cup qualifying coming to a close, UEFA have revealed the teams that will take part in each League in the 2018-19 UEFA Nations League.

Chris Coleman's side had been on course to challenge the likes of England, Germany, Spain, Italy and France for the inaugural title in European football's third major worldwide competition but lost out by less than 600 coefficient points.

Joining England in the top division are France, Germany, Spain, Portugal, Belgium, Switzerland, Italy, Poland, Iceland, Croatia and the Netherlands.

Each division will be split into four groups of three or four teams, who will play each other.

When it was unveiled in January the new Uefa Nations League was touted as the answer to "rejuvenate national team football".

The national teams of Ukraine and Russian Federation will be divided into different groups.

The UEFA Nations League Finals competition for the teams that win the four groups within the top division is scheduled for June 2019.

March 2020 will see the play-offs for Euro 2020, with the final tournament to be held in 13 cities across Europe, including Dublin, in June-July.

Wales just missed out on League A, edged out by Netherlands, with Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland also in League B with them.

Matches to be played home and away between September and November 2018 (teams will play four or six games depending on the size of their group).

The Nations League - the brainchild of Michel Platini - is being introduced to bring in more interest in friendly dates while there is the added bonus of a backdoor entry into Euro 2020. The winners of each group will be promoted to league above and the losers will be relegated.

Teams will be drawn into four groups of four.

Play-offs in four separate one-off mini-tournaments will find the four final participants in the competition.

League A will consist of the 12 top-ranked teams.

The competition, which will begin in September 2018 and will create four qualifying places for Euro 2020.

League D: Azerbaijan, Macedonia, Belarus, Georgia, Armenia, Latvia, Faroe Islands, Luxembourg, Kazakhstan, Moldova, Liechtenstein, Malta, Andorra, Kosovo, San Marino, Gibraltar.

The qualification for Euro 2020 will now now run from March to November 2019, with Dublin hosting the Group draw on 2 December 2018.
