What's Next for the Bundestag, Merkel and Germany's Security Policies?

What's Next for the Bundestag, Merkel and Germany's Security Policies?

Schulz's SPD was down to 20.5 percent, but still managed to remain the second party after the conservatives.

A The party's platform calls for immediate closure of Germany's borders to stop "unregulated mass immigration", including many "illiterates" who can not be integrated into society. Merkel's conservatives won 33 per cent of the vote, down 8.5 points from last time, while coalition partner the Social Democrats also lost ground heavily and announced it wouldn't be part of the next government.

Meanwhile, another ally of Merkel's, the Social Democrats, fared rather badly in the elections, forcing them to review their stance quite from the basics.

"Angela Merkel deserved this defeat", Spiegel's Dirk Kurbjuweit wrote, accusing her of running an "uninspired" campaign and "largely ignoring the challenges posed by the right".

Nina Schick, political analyst at consultancy firm Hanbury Strategy said, it is "very important to keep things in perspective" when analysing the AfD's election performance, citing a "huge change" in German society in the wake of the refugee crisis.

Speaking to the Tagesspiegel newspaper in Berlin, Josef Schuster, head of the Central Council of Jews in Germany, called the AfD a "party that agitates against minorities".

The far-right leader's comments came during the same press conference in which he said Jews have nothing to fear from his party's electoral victory.

Leading AfD candidate, Alexander Gauland, gave a foretaste of the hostile new tone expected in parliament, saying it would "hound" Ms Merkel and "get our country and our people back". Sounding much like Donald Trump, they want a border force to hermetically seal Germany from immigrants beating at its door and one leader even suggested shooting illegal immigrants seeking to enter. The far-right Alternative for Germany received 12.6% of the vote, making it the third largest party.

Many Germans see the rise of the AfD as a similar rejection of the status quo as votes for Brexit and Donald Trump past year.

Weidel, married to a film producer and the mother of two children, claims her party is not homophobic, but AFD ran an "obituary" for German family values when the nation passed marriage equality in June. Building a coalition would now take some months. Chief among their concerns is the way the government has handled the influx of more than 1.5 million refugees since mid-2015, a majority of them Muslim. That arrangement is unlikely to continue because, in order to undermine the SPD, Merkel's milquetoast Christian Democrats have moved to the left.
