Jeff Sessions Is Met With Protest at Georgetown Law

During a speech [text, video] at the Georgetown University Law Center [press release] on Tuesday, Attorney General Jeff Sessions said the Department of Justice will become more involved in the "national recommitment to free speech on campus [es]".

In a speech at Georgetown University Law Center in Washington, Mr Sessions heavily criticised educational institutions that ban controversial speakers.

"Freedom of thought and speech on the American campus are under attack", Sessions said. University administrators, Sessions said, are letting protesters silence minority viewpoints.

"And let me be clear that protecting free speech does not mean condoning violence like we saw recently in Charlottesville". He then added, "it's not a contradiction".

Phillips said the uninvited students "find it extraordinarily hypocritical that AG Sessions would lecture future attorneys about the importance of free speech on campus while actively excluding the wider student body".

Outside McDonough Hall, third-year Georgetown law student Imani Waweru said he joined a group of about 100 protesting the attorney general's speech because opposition to various policies Sessions has implemented in his short tenure.

'But it is transforming into an echo chamber of political correctness and homogeneous thought, a shelter for fragile egos'. "We will enforce federal law, defend free speech, and protect students' free expression".

Sessions made his remarks about the National Football League protests following a speech he gave on free speech, in which he said the Justice Department is going to start taking greater steps to protect the rights of speakers on college campuses whom he fears are being censored by student protesters.

With the impending threat that other campuses' speech policies might come under Justice Department scrutiny, universities may be compelled to come up with solutions sooner rather than later, Mr. Paulson said.

In it, the school justified its decision to rescind invitations from students not associated with the Georgetown Center for the Constitution - an organization in the university's law school that espouses the originalist interpretation of law championed by the late Antonin Scalia - by arguing that the initial invite should never have been sent to them in the first place.

Sessions was at Georgetown to deliver an address about free speech on college campuses. The protesters were dressed in black.

Other guests, including American Conservative Union Chairman Matt Schlapp, said in the article the conversation about Sessions was simply "candid" and the dinner was "cordial". "In the wake of #TakeTheKnee, I find it not only disingenuous but nearly laughable that Attorney General Sessions or anyone from this administration could truthfully speak as an authority on protections of free speech".

"A national recommitment to free speech on campus and to ensuring First Amendment rights is long overdue".

Sessions further discussed the measures Berkely took to manage the conservative event on campus. "This permissive attitude toward the heckler's veto has spawned a cottage industry of protestors who have quickly learned that school administrators will capitulate to their demands". Sessions was adamant: "The president has free speech rights too".

'We are unable to hold an official UC Berkeley speaking event, Yiannopoulos said amid intense security, according to the Los Angeles Times.
